FERMA and Commercial Risk Europe hosted the European Risk Management Awards 2023 celebrating industry excellence, standout achievements, and market-advancing strategies at a ceremony held in Antwerp, Belgium, last night.

With awards for individual talent, company and programme innovation, and training and education, the event showcased the best in risk management across Europe. The night also saw the launch of a new category – “Outstanding Contribution to the Risk Management Profession – Association”.

The highly sought-after award of Risk Manager of the Year was awarded to Adriana Cavaliere, Senior Manager Risk, Skeyes, Belgium. A deserving winner, Cavaliere was recognised for her “diversity of experience and commitment to excellence in risk management and governance” which enabled her to play an integral part in facilitating risk-based decision making and ensuring the highest levels of risk awareness across Skeyes. Described as a “risk visionary”, she was commended for her dedication to building the risk foundations that underpinned her organisation.

The night also saw the Rising Star of the Year Award given to Antonia Müller, Interim Group Head of Risk, Domestic & General (D&G), Germany. Recognised for rapidly becoming a key risk leader within D&G,  Müller has spear-headed the delivery of the organisation’s risk management framework and is “always seeking innovation or change and challenging existing processes to further improve and refine D&G’s risk management approaches” .Her highly collaborative and supportive approach was also highlighted, reflected in her “One Team” attitude towards every aspect of her role.

The winner of the Business Continuity Programme of the Year award was George Ong, Chief Risk Officer, Northern Ireland Water Group, Northern Ireland. Ong was commended for his work on evolving the business continuity plans developed by the company during the pandemic, resulting in the restructuring of how the Northern Ireland Water Group manages business continuity-related risks internally, as well as how it works with brokers and cyber insurers to better manage cyber-related risks.

In the category of Innovative Insurance Programme, the award was given to Karl-Johan Rodert, Global Manager Captive & Insurance, Autoliv, Sweden. In response to challenging market conditions in the product liability and recall insurance sectors in the automotive industry, Rodert developed a new structured fronting solution designed to provide improved access to these markets for both insurance and reinsurance.

The new award of Outstanding Contribution to the Risk Management Profession – Association was awarded to Charlotte Enggaard, Senior Director, Head of Group Risk Management, Carlsberg Breweries and President, DARIM. Under Enggaard’s Presidency DARIM has established its credentials as a highly innovative association and last year opened the doors of its annual conference to insurers, brokers and loss adjusters to create a platform that provided a broader industry perspective.

Commending the award winners, FERMA’s new President Charlotte Hedemark said: “It is inspiring to be part of an event which shines a deserving light on the incredible levels of dedication, innovation and achievement that are evident across every aspect of the risk management community. Each winner has been integral to raising the bar across every aspect of our profession and setting new standards in risk excellence. As FERMA continues to work more closely with the National Associations, we do so with an immense sense of pride in the extraordinary talent that exists within our profession.”
